Major 2nds are the distance of 2 frets on guitar.

G to A is two frets away.

G to A is a Major 2nd.

G to Ab is one fret away.

G to Ab is a minor 2nd.

Quality: Major and Minor

Besides numbers we have Quality to describe how wide an interval is.

Quality can be Major, minor, Perfect, Augmented or Diminished.

When we lower a Major we get a minor.

When we raise a Minor we get major.

C to D

D to E

are Major 2nds

When you play C to D, there is one fret in between.

That makes it a Major 2nd.

Minor 2nds are one fret away. Between C and D is another note.

C to Db is one fret. C to Db is a minor 2nd.

Db is between C and D.

We can also call Db by another name.

Remember if we “raise” C by one fret we get “C #”.
